HOW TO USE
Once the big feelings have passed, the kit can help make sure they’re truly calm and regulated. Offer a favourite tool to ground them fully, because a child who is still dysregulated can’t listen or learn. When their body is settled and their eyes are bright again, that’s your moment to reconnect, reflect, and gently talk about what happened. Then tuck the kit away so it’s ready for next time.
It’s hot and loud. Tears, yelling; totally normal. Pause first (steady your breath, fewer words). Then invite choice: “Hey buddy, this is really hard. Want to pick a couple of things from the kit?” Let play do the regulating; you co-regulate beside them by simply being present. Repair comes after ONLY when they're regulated and receptive.
You notice the tells; whiny voice, hitting or throwing, “no” to everything. Pause with them, get low, breathe, and offer the kit before it boils over: “Do you want to choose something from the kit?” Using it early gives their body and mind a chance to reset before the big feelings take over.
The Calming Kit is more than just a box of sensory tools — it’s a proven method rooted in brain science, helping you and your child move through emotional overwhelm with calm, connection, and growth.
It follows our Pause → Play → Grow framework:
PAUSE
Create a moment of stillness. This short pause acts as a “circuit breaker” for the stress response, helping you both shift gears and step out of the emotional storm.
PLAY
Choose a sensory tool from the kit. Whether it’s squeezing, spinning, shaking, or focusing — these physical actions engage the nervous system, making it easier for the body to calm down before trying to talk or reason.
GROW
Once your child’s body is calm, their brain is open and ready to connect. This is the ideal time to talk about what happened, problem-solve together, and build emotional understanding for next time.
By using this method regularly, you're not just calming the moment — you're helping your child develop lifelong tools for emotional resilience.
